Women’s health is one of those topics we’re all expected to instinctively understand. As if the moment we hit puberty, we’re handed a magical handbook explaining periods, hormones, contraception, pregnancy, menopause, and everything in between. Spoiler: no handbook. Most of us are improvising, usually while juggling work, family, and the general chaos of life.
Thankfully, at Southend Coastal Surgeries in Thorpebay, Shoeburyness and Westcliff, we have something far better than a handbook: a women’s health team who actually know what they’re talking about, and who genuinely care.
Let me brag for a moment, because they deserve it.
We’re proud to have Dr Emma Traer, one of our women’s health specialists, offering expert care across our surgeries. Emma fits coils, implants, and other long‑acting contraception with calm confidence and a reassuring manner that instantly puts patients at ease. She’s deeply knowledgeable, endlessly patient, and passionate about making women’s health feel accessible, comfortable, and empowering.
Working alongside Emma is our Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Claire, who leads women’s health across all our sites — North Shoebury, Thorpe Bay, and Westcliff Medical Centre. Claire doesn’t just specialise in women’s health; she teaches it, examines other nurses, and is the clinician other clinicians call when they need expert guidance. She’s the kind of practitioner who can explain contraception, menopause, pelvic health, and hormonal chaos with the calm confidence of someone who has seen it all and still loves her job.
Supporting Claire are our brilliant nurses Lavinia and Meghan, who bring warmth, skill, and a reassuring sense of “you’re safe here” to every appointment. They’re the type of nurses who make awkward conversations feel normal, who listen without judgement, and who genuinely care about helping women feel informed and supported.
At our Westcliff Medical Centre, you’ll also meet Dannie, our wonderful nurse who works closely with Claire to deliver women’s health care with kindness, expertise, and a down‑to‑earth approach that instantly puts people at ease.
And then there’s Katie, our Physician Associate, also trained by Claire in women’s health — who is based at Westcliff. Katie brings a calm, thoughtful presence to her consultations, and she’s brilliant at helping women navigate their options, understand their bodies, and feel confident in their choices.
Together, this team is why our women’s health service is truly special.
One of the things I’m proudest of is that we offer the full range of contraception right here at the surgery — yes, implants and coils included, all fitted by our own clinicians. No being sent elsewhere, no long waits, no feeling like you’re navigating a maze of referrals. Everything is done in‑house by people who do this every day.
And because choosing contraception can feel overwhelming (and occasionally like trying to pick the right option on a restaurant menu when everything looks complicated), we also offer confidential counselling sessions. These are relaxed, private conversations where you can talk through your options, ask questions, and figure out what’s right for you, without pressure, judgement, or medical jargon.
So yes, women’s health can be complicated. But you don’t have to figure it out alone. You’ve got Dr Emma Traer, Claire, Lavinia, Meghan, Dannie, Katie, and the whole Southend Coastal Surgeries team behind you, and they’re very, very good at what they do.
Periods, Puberty & Reproductive Health
Let’s start with the basics: periods. Those delightful monthly reminders that our bodies have opinions. They can be light, heavy, early, late, dramatic, or suspiciously quiet. And while every woman’s cycle is different, there are certain things that shouldn’t be ignored.
If your period suddenly changes, becomes extremely heavy, or leaves you curled up like a prawn on the sofa, please don’t suffer in silence. You’re not “being dramatic”, you’re not “making a fuss”, and you’re definitely not alone. Our clinicians can help with investigations, treatment options, and reassurance, because sometimes you just need someone to say, “No, that’s not normal, and yes, we can help.”
And then there’s contraception. With so many options, choosing the right one can feel like trying to pick a Netflix show — too many choices, not enough guidance. Pills, patches, implants, injections, coils… It’s a lot.
The good news? We offer every form of contraception right here at the surgery, fitted by our own highly trained clinicians. And if you’re not sure what’s right for you, we offer confidential counselling sessions where you can talk through your options without judgement, pressure, or medical jargon.
🌼 Cervical Screening: The Smear Test Saga (Let’s Talk Honestly)
Let’s talk about smear tests, the appointment many of us avoid, postpone, or pretend we forgot about. And honestly? We get it. It’s not glamorous, it’s not comfortable, and it’s definitely not something you look forward to. But it is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
At Southend Coastal Surgeries, we want you to feel safe, supported, and completely at ease when you come in for your cervical screening. Our staff are non‑judgemental, gentle, and experienced, and they understand that this appointment can feel daunting for lots of women.

You’re in control — always.
You can:
- Ask for a female clinician
- Request a chaperone
- Bring someone with you
- Take your time
- Stop at any point
- Even book an appointment just to talk about the smear first if you’re worried
Why is cervical screening so important? Because it saves lives. Truly.
Some key facts:
- Cervical screening prevents around 70% of cervical cancers.
- If everyone attended their smear, that number could rise to 83%.
- Most cervical cancers develop in women who haven’t been screened regularly.
- Screening doesn’t look for cancer — it looks for early cell changes long before they become dangerous.
In other words: a smear test can catch something years before it becomes a problem.
We know it’s not easy — and that’s okay.
Whether you’re embarrassed, anxious, have had a difficult experience before, or simply don’t know what to expect, please tell us. We genuinely care, and we will do everything we can to make the appointment feel comfortable, respectful, and calm.
Our nurses — Lavinia, Meghan, Dannie, and Claire — are experts at helping women feel at ease. They’ve seen every shape, size, age, and situation. Nothing surprises them, nothing embarrasses them, and nothing you say will ever be judged.
If you’re nervous, here’s what we want you to know:
- You are not alone — many women feel this way.
- You can talk to us first.
- You can bring someone with you.
- You can ask questions.
- You can stop at any time.
- You will be treated with kindness and respect.
Your comfort matters just as much as your health.
A few minutes could protect your future.
The test itself usually takes less than five minutes. Five minutes for something that could save your life. Five minutes that could give you peace of mind. Five minutes that could prevent years of worry later.
We’re here to make those five minutes as easy and supportive as possible.
🌺 Breast Awareness: Knowing Your Normal
Breast awareness isn’t about memorising diagrams or becoming an expert in anatomy; it’s simply about knowing what’s normal for you. All women’s breasts are different. Some are lumpy, some are smooth, some change with your cycle, and some seem to have a personality of their own. The important thing is recognising when something feels different.
Why breast awareness matters

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but early detection makes a huge difference. When caught early, the chances of successful treatment are significantly higher, and that’s why checking your breasts regularly is so important.
A few key facts to keep in mind:
- Around 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
- Most breast cancers are found by women noticing changes themselves.
- Early detection can increase survival rates to over 90%.
- Screening (mammograms) is offered every three years for women aged 50 to 70.
In other words: being familiar with your own body is one of the most powerful tools you have.
What to look for – When you check your breasts, you’re looking for changes, not perfection. Things to keep an eye on include:a new lump or thickening, Changes in size or shape, Skin dimpling or puckering, Nipple changes, persistent pain in one area, and Redness or a rash that doesn’t go away.
If you notice anything that feels out of the ordinary, please get in touch. You’re never wasting our time, and you don’t need to wait and “see if it goes away”. We’d much rather check something early and reassure you than have you worry alone.
🔥 Perimenopause & Menopause: The Plot Twist Nobody Warned Us About

If puberty was the chaotic opening chapter of womanhood, menopause is the dramatic sequel, complete with plot twists, unexpected character development, and the occasional hot flush that makes you question whether you’ve accidentally swallowed a radiator.
Perimenopause and menopause are completely natural stages of life, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy. In fact, many women describe this time as feeling like their body has decided to run every software update at once: mood changes, sleep problems, joint pain, brain fog, night sweats, irregular periods… the full works.
And here’s the important part: you don’t have to “just get on with it.”
You deserve support — real support. At Southend Coastal Surgeries, we take menopause seriously. Our women’s health team — Dr Emma Traer, Claire, Lavinia, Meghan, Dannie, and Katie- are trained, experienced, and genuinely passionate about helping women feel like themselves again.
You can talk to us about:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Mood changes and anxiety
- Sleep problems
- Brain fog
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort
- Changes in libido
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Joint aches and pains
Nothing is “too small” or “too embarrassing”. If it’s affecting your life, it matters.
What support is available? There are lots of options, and we’ll help you explore them at your own pace. These may include:
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
- Non‑hormonal treatments
- Vaginal oestrogen
- Lifestyle advice
- Support for mood and sleep
- Contraception during perimenopause
We’ll talk through the benefits, risks, and what might suit your body and lifestyle. No pressure, no judgement, no medical jargon.
Menopause is not the end — it’s a new chapter.
Many women feel lost during perimenopause and menopause. Some feel like they’ve become a different person. Others feel overwhelmed, emotional, or disconnected. If that’s you, please know this: you can get that version of yourself back.
With the right support, many women feel stronger, calmer, and more in control than they have in years.
Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing: The Part We Don’t Talk About Enough

Mental health is a huge part of women’s health, and it deserves just as much attention as anything physical. Women carry so much — families, work, relationships, caring responsibilities, hormones, life admin, and the constant pressure to appear “fine”. But being fine isn’t a personality trait, and you don’t have to pretend you’re okay when you’re not. If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, low, irritable, exhausted, or simply not like yourself, we want you to know that you’re not alone and you’re never an inconvenience.
Our clinicians understand that mental health doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s crying in the car. Sometimes it’s feeling numb. Sometimes it’s snapping at people you love. Sometimes it’s lying awake at 3am replaying something you said years ago. Whatever it looks like for you, we will listen — kindly, patiently, and without judgement. You don’t need the perfect words or a neat explanation. Just tell us you’re finding things hard, and we’ll take it from there.
Many women experience emotional changes linked to their menstrual cycle, including PMDD, which can feel far more intense than “a bit moody”. Others struggle during pregnancy or after birth, when hormones, exhaustion, and the pressure to cope can make everything feel heavier. Postnatal depression and anxiety are far more common than people realise, and talking about it is a sign of strength, not weakness. You’re not failing, you’re not alone, and you deserve support.
Menopause can also have a huge impact on mental wellbeing. Mood swings, anxiety, irritability, and emotional overwhelm can appear out of nowhere and feel completely out of character. Many women describe feeling like they’ve lost themselves — and that can be frightening. But with the right support, you can feel like yourself again. You don’t have to push through it alone, and you don’t have to “just get on with it”.
Whatever stage of life you’re in, your mental health matters. Your feelings matter. You matter. If you’re struggling, please reach out. We’re here to support you with compassion, understanding, and the reassurance that whatever you’re experiencing, you will be met with kindness.
Women’s health is complex, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming — but you don’t have to navigate any of it alone. Whether you’re coming in for a smear test, choosing contraception, checking your breasts, trying to conceive, recovering after birth, managing menopause, or simply needing someone to talk to about how you’re feeling, we are here for you. Every woman’s journey is different, and every experience is valid. You will always be met with kindness, patience, and respect.
Our team are passionate about supporting women through every stage of life. They are skilled, gentle, non‑judgemental, and genuinely committed to making your healthcare experience feel safe, comfortable, and human. You can ask questions, take your time, bring someone with you, request a chaperone, or book an appointment just to talk things through. Your comfort matters just as much as your health.
Most importantly, we want you to know that you are never a burden. You are never “making a fuss”. You are never wasting our time. If something doesn’t feel right — physically, emotionally, or both — we want to hear from you. Your wellbeing is important, and you deserve care that listens, supports, and empowers you.
Women’s health isn’t just about appointments and tests; it’s about feeling understood, feeling safe, and feeling like your concerns matter. At Southend Coastal Surgeries, they do. And whatever you’re facing, we’ll face it with you
