A message from Southend Coastal Surgeries — helping you stay well this winter.

Winter Respiratory Illnesses | How to Stay Well with Asthma or COPD | Southend Coastal Surgeries
Winter has a way of creeping up on us. One minute you’re enjoying a crisp autumn walk, and the next you’re surrounded by coughs, sniffles, sneezes, and people insisting “it’s just a cold” while sounding like they’ve swallowed gravel. For most people, winter bugs are annoying but manageable. But if you have asthma, COPD, or any long‑term lung condition, winter can feel like your lungs are auditioning for a dramatic role they didn’t ask for.
So, let’s talk about how to look after yourself, how to spot when things are changing, and when we want to hear from you.
Why Winter Bugs Hit Harder
Cold air irritates the airways. Viruses inflame them. Together, they can make your lungs more sensitive, tighter, and more reactive. Even people with perfectly healthy lungs feel it, so if you already have asthma or COPD, it’s no surprise that winter can feel like a marathon you didn’t sign up for.
Your airways simply don’t like being cold, stressed, or infected. They behave like grumpy toddlers: dramatic, unpredictable, and very quick to let you know when they’re unhappy.
Pharmacy First: Your Secret Winter Weapon
Before you panic‑dial us at 8am, remember Pharmacy First can help with many common winter illnesses. Pharmacists can assess and treat sore throats, ear infections, sinusitis, impetigo, infected bites, and more, often supplying prescription‑only medicines without needing a GP appointment.

They’re fast, friendly, and usually open longer hours than we are. And they’re brilliant at helping you work out whether your winter misery needs treatment or just tissues, tea, and patience.
If your symptoms fit the Pharmacy First criteria, they can help you straight away. And if they think you need us, they’ll tell you — no fuss, no delay.
A Word About Antibiotics (and Why We Don’t Hand Them Out Like Sweets)
Let’s be very clear: most winter respiratory illnesses are caused by viruses, and antibiotics do absolutely nothing for viruses. They don’t speed recovery, reduce symptoms, or prevent complications.
Giving antibiotics for a viral infection is like trying to fix a broken radiator with a banana — it won’t work, and it causes problems.
Every unnecessary antibiotic contributes to antibiotic resistance, which means antibiotics stop working when we need them most. That’s dangerous for everyone, especially people with long‑term lung conditions.
So, if we say “you don’t need antibiotics,” we’re not dismissing you; we’re protecting you. And we’re protecting the future of antibiotics for the people who genuinely need them.
How to Look After Yourself.
The basics matter more than people realise. Keep warm. Stay hydrated. Rest when you need to. And please, use your inhalers exactly as prescribed. Your preventer inhaler isn’t optional; it’s your daily armour. Your reliever inhaler is there for when things tighten up, not for every minor wobble.
If you’re coughing more, feeling tighter, or getting breathless, don’t ignore it. Your lungs are very good at sending early warning signs. Listening to them can prevent a small flare‑up from becoming a full‑blown winter drama.
And if you have COPD, keep your inhalers close, pace yourself, and don’t push through breathlessness “to be brave.” Breathlessness is a symptom, not a personality trait.
Flu & COVID Vaccines: Your Winter Shield
If you have asthma, COPD, or any long‑term respiratory condition, you are eligible for both the flu vaccine and the COVID booster. These vaccines don’t just reduce your chance of getting ill, they reduce how severe things become if you do catch something.
And the best part? You don’t need to chase us.
You’ll receive a text message from Southend Coastal Surgeries with a booking link, so you can choose a time that suits you. Quick, simple, and one of the easiest ways to protect your lungs this winter.
Your lungs work hard for you. A quick jab is one of the best ways to return the favour.
When We Want to Hear from You
If your breathing changes, your cough worsens, your inhalers aren’t helping, or you’re struggling at night, please contact us. We’d much rather see you early than see you in crisis.
If you’re using your blue inhaler more often, waking up breathless, or feeling like your chest is tighter than usual, that’s your cue to reach out. You’re not bothering us, you’re doing exactly what we want you to do.
And of course, if you’re struggling to breathe, can’t speak in full sentences, or your reliever isn’t helping, call 999. It’s always better to be safe.
Our Respiratory Team — Real People, Real Expertise, Real Care
Winter is when our surgery feels a bit like mission control: phones ringing, inhalers being checked, people arriving wrapped in scarves and clutching tissues. And right in the middle of all that organised chaos is our respiratory team — calm, kind, and quietly brilliant.
Our respiratory work is guided by Claire, one of our clinical leads and the ICB Asthma Champion for Southend, Castle Point and Rochford. Claire has a knack for spotting tiny details that make a big difference, and she makes sure our nursing team stay trained to the highest standard. If there’s a new guideline, a better inhaler technique, or a smarter way to support patients, we know about it.
Southend Coastal Surgeries has a whole community of clinicians who keep our respiratory care running smoothly: nurses who can spot a flare‑up before you’ve even finished describing it, paramedics who bring calm to the most breathless moments, physician associates who untangle tricky symptoms, pharmacy technicians who know inhalers inside out, advanced practitioners who handle complex cases with confidence, and health coaches and pharmacists who help you make changes that actually stick.
And because our patients know us by name — and we’re proud of that — here are the wonderful humans who make up our respiratory family:
Robin, Lavinia, Meghan, Paul, Reece, Marc, Anabelle, Danni, Katie, Nadisha, Amy.
They’re the people who check your inhaler technique without judgement, adjust your plan when your lungs are being dramatic, and reassure you when winter bugs make everything feel harder than it should. Whether you’re popping in for a quick inhaler check, a COPD review, or just need someone to explain what’s going on with your breathing, you’ll meet clinicians who genuinely care and who want you to leave feeling lighter, calmer, and able to breathe a little easier.
Stay Warm, Stay Well, Stay Supported
Winter can be tough on the lungs, but you don’t have to face it alone. If you need advice, reassurance, or a review, just get in touch. We’re here to help you breathe easier — this winter and all year round.
