COPD: Understanding Your Lungs, Your Symptoms, and How We Can Help You Breathe Easier

A message from Southend Coastal Surgeries — here for you this Stoptober and beyond.

COPD is one of those conditions that creeps into life slowly. A bit more breathlessness than usual. A cough that doesn’t quite go away. Feeling puffed out walking up the stairs when you used to manage them just fine. Many people brush it off as “getting older” or “I’m just unfit,” but COPD is far more common — and far more manageable — than most people realise.

At Southend Coastal Surgeries, we want to help you understand COPD properly, recognise the signs early, feel confident managing your symptoms, and know exactly how we can support you.

So… What Is COPD? (Explained simply, without the medical jargon)

COPD — Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease — is a long‑term condition that affects the lungs and makes breathing harder over time. It’s usually caused by long‑term irritation or damage to the airways, most commonly from smoking, but also from pollution, workplace exposure, or repeated chest infections.

If asthma is the “over‑sensitive smoke alarm,” COPD is more like a hallway with too much clutter in it. The airways become narrowed, inflamed, and sometimes floppy, making it harder for air to move in and out. This leads to breathlessness, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and that frustrating feeling of not being able to get enough air.

COPD doesn’t appear overnight — it develops slowly. Many people have symptoms for years before realising something isn’t quite right. The good news is that with the right support, inhalers, lifestyle changes, and regular reviews, COPD can be managed extremely well.

Think You Might Have COPD? Here’s How We Can Check

If you’ve noticed breathlessness, a persistent cough, wheezing, or you’re getting more chest infections than usual, it’s worth getting checked. COPD is often under‑diagnosed because people assume their symptoms are “just age” or “just smoking.”

Checking for COPD is simple. We’ll talk through your symptoms, check your breathing, and do a test called spirometry, which measures how well your lungs move air. It’s quick, safe, and surprisingly easy — you basically blow into a machine that tells us how your lungs are behaving.

If COPD is diagnosed, we’ll work with you to create a personalised plan that fits your life. No scary lectures, no judgement — just support, kindness, and a clear plan to help you breathe better.

Inhalers and Treatment: What You Need to Know

COPD inhalers work differently depending on your symptoms and lung function. Some help open the airways, some reduce inflammation, and some do both. We’ll make sure you’re on the right inhaler for your symptoms, and we’ll check your technique regularly — because even the best inhaler won’t work properly if it’s not used correctly.

If you’re finding yourself more breathless, using your reliever inhaler more often, or struggling with flare‑ups, it’s a sign your treatment needs adjusting. That’s exactly what we’re here for.

What Happens During a COPD Review?

Your COPD review is your chance to check in with us, talk about your symptoms, and make sure your treatment is still right for you. We’ll look at your inhaler technique, your breathlessness, your activity levels, your oxygen saturation, and any flare‑ups you’ve had.

We’ll also talk about things that make a big difference — stopping smoking, staying active, managing colds and infections, and keeping vaccinations up to date. COPD changes over time, and your care should change with it.

COPD and Coughs, Colds, and Winter Bugs

If you have COPD, coughs and colds can hit harder and linger longer. Viral infections can make your airways more inflamed and sensitive, which can trigger flare‑ups.

If you catch a cold, keep taking your inhalers exactly as prescribed. Use your reliever inhaler if you become more breathless, and keep an eye on your symptoms. If your breathing worsens, you’re coughing more than usual, or you feel unwell, please contact us — early treatment can prevent flare‑ups from becoming more serious.

And if you’re struggling to breathe, can’t speak in full sentences, or your reliever isn’t helping, call 999. It’s always better to be safe.

COPD and Smoking: Why Stoptober Matters

Stopping smoking is the single most important thing you can do for COPD. It won’t reverse the condition, but it can slow it down dramatically and improve your breathing, your energy, and your quality of life.

During Stoptober, we offer personalised quit plans, nicotine replacement therapy, vaping guidance, and ongoing support. Even cutting down can make a noticeable difference.
